German Club
About German Club
The AHS German Club allows current and former students, along with those who are just interested in the German culture, to get together and learn more about the countries where German is spoken and the people who speak that language. Activities include dining at German restaurants in the area, attending plays and concerts, watching films, competing at the state German festival in spring and --everybody's favorite -- the annual trip to Oktoberfest in Helen Georgia. We bring the party!
GERMAN-AMERICAN PARTNERSHIP PROGRAM (GAPP)
AHS participated in an exchange with the Regine-Hildebrandt-Gesamtschule in Birkenwerder, Germany (near Berlin) as part of the German-American Partnership Program. During the month of September 2019, 20 Berliners stayed in the homes of AHS students and attended our school and got to know our customs and community. A group of 15 had planned to go to Berlin on the second part of the exchange, but unfortunately, the trip was cancelled due to the CoViD-19 pandemic.
Planning for a second round of the GAPP exchange has begun for the 2021-2022 school year. Participants are being sought to host the group coming from Berlin during the 2021-2022 school year and travel to Berlin in May 2022. Talk to Herr Brown if you are interested: [email protected]
GERMAN-AMERICAN VIRTUAL EXCHANGE (GAVE)
Because of the restriction on travel during the CoViD-19 pandemic, students in the Regine-Hildebrandt-Gesamtschule and AHS participated in a virtual exchange on multiple occasions. Conducted using zoom technology, the sessions allowed students on both sides of the Atlantic to compare their everyday lives. Topics included clothing, daily rituals and our hometowns. Although it wasn't the same as hosting our new friends, it was a great way to learn about the lives of the students who will be traveling to Alcoa in the future.
CLUB MEETINGS
The German Club meets on Club Rotation B during the AHS Advisory Period on Fridays. Club meetings are also held on Thursdays at 7:45 am.
