Pre-Practical Nursing Program
Starting THIS Semester
at Alcoa High School

Alcoa City Schools is proud to partner with the Tennessee College of Applied Technology Knoxville (TCAT)  to offer coursework leading to practical nursing licensure (LPN). Classes will be open to eligible juniors and seniors through the health science department at Alcoa High School.  Through this pre-practical nursing program, students will have the opportunity to complete 432 clock hours, of the required 1296, in order to become licensed practical nurses. Eligible students can utilize Dual Enrollment grant funds which will cover the costs of these college courses.

Student Eligibility:
  • Be a currently enrolled health science student at Alcoa High School
  • Be a junior or senior with a 2.5 GPA or above
  • Meet TCAT attendance policy requirements
  • Have at least an 80 average in Biology 1, English 10, and Algebra I
  • Be recommended by Dr. Bell or Mrs. Everett
  • Must complete the Dual Enrollment Grant application each year
  • Have their own transportation to and from clinical sites
  • Have parental permission to participate in the program
  • Be willing to abide by dress code and purchase necessary uniforms for clinicals
  • Maintain at least an 80 average in all pre-PN coursework
  • Be current on all immunizations and obtain vaccines (flu shots), as required by partnering healthcare clinical sites

Upon successful completion of pre-PN coursework, and graduation from Alcoa High School, students must be willing to enroll in TCAT-Knoxville’s new summer term program at Blount Memorial Hospital and will then transition into the second of three trimesters in the adult LPN program.  Program completion culminates at the end of the third trimester and successful students can then sit for the state licensure exam. Prospective students should check with TCAT Knoxville regarding post-graduation Tennessee Promise funding in order to continue their training.
