ALCOA: A Century in Pictures and Prose
Using the beautifully-produced historical record of the City of Alcoa written by Judge David Duggan in 2019 (and purchased for AHS by a grant from the Alcoa City Schools Foundation), answer the following questions that help explain how Alcoa has answered the Three Questions that Every Society has to Answer. (Thanks to the Class of 2021 (3rd period, 1st 9 weeks) for finding questions in this new book.)
Question 1: What to Produce?
1. On page 35, the pictures show the Babcock Land and Lumber Company. The text on page 39 gives the names of the streets named for the hardwood products of the company. What four streets are named?
2. Before ALCOA Inc could make aluminum, it needed lots of electric power. The photograph of page 8 shows two of the rivers that would be dammed to create that hydroelectric power. Name them.
3. Photos on pages 22 and 23 show construction of facilities for the production of aluminum. Together, the carbon plant and the reduction plant were known as what plant?
4. The two photos on page 97 show the impact of the North Plant on the production of aluminum. What are two records of distinction mentioned in the caption for the North Plant?
5. From the text on page 28, when did the first potroom go into production? ______. How many days later did the second potroom go into production?
6. On page 64 is a photo of the first ingot being placed in a remelt furnace. Where did this take place and who were the workers pictured?
7. On page 17 it is discussed how Alcoa (the mountainous area where the dams were being built) would be connected to the major railroads. The colorful story is that the company was told it would take six months. How many weeks did it actually take for Alcoa to get connected by railroad to the plants being constructed to North Maryville?
8. On page 21 is a photo of a foundation being poured for the reduction plant. On page 22 there is another photo of a construction group for the reduction plant. In what year was this construction?
Question 2: How to Produce it?
1. The photo on page 66 shows workers standing in front of what piece of machinery? This was where the aluminum was smelted.
2. On page 41 there is a picture of black workers standing in front of aluminum pig. How was this photo used?
3. On page 40 the text states that black men were recruited from what three southern states to work in extremely hot conditions of the potrooms?
4. The text on page 97 states that a number of potrooms were added or under construction at the South Plant between 1930 and 1941. How many?
5. On page 96 is a photograph that shows how many workers got to their jobs. What method of transportation was used?
6. What are the workers on page 69 doing?
7. On page 99 it is stated that at one time, the entire supply of what was being produced in Alcoa?
8. The job advertisement on page 98 states that the average hourly work week during the war was how many hours?
9. On page 25, it is stated in the second paragraph of the right-hand column that the company had accomplished something amazing. What was it?
Question 3: How to Divide What is Produced Among the People in Society?
1. The name “Alcoa” was not originally used for the area that is today the City of Alcoa. Page 10 shows a photo of the area that was originally called “Alcoa”. Where was this base camp named Alcoa located?
2. The photograph of Wright Road on page 29 shows the difference in the size of homes being built for company executives versus workers (along East Lincoln). How many executive homes can be seen in the middle of the photograph?
3. The aluminum company created many amenities for its workers and residents in the city. On page 83 a photo shows the Springbrook pool and page 85 highlights a picture of Hall pool. When did the Hall Swimming Pool open?
4. The photos on page 118 show different programs/classes that city students had in their schools. Name a few of these.
5. Page 141 shows a picture of the Alcoa High School football team. What year did the team win their first state championship game?
6. GLCO’s Bar-B-Q is pictured on pg. 95. How do you think this impacted the community?
7. What metal was considered to line the Hall Pool during construction, (page 86)?
8. On page 122 one finds a picture of the marching band. How many superior ratings did the band receive while A. R. Strang was the director?
9. On page 132 is a picture of the Alcoa High School’s 1938 girls’ basketball team. Who was the team’s finest female athlete at that time and also named all-district tournament team for three consecutive years?
10. The photograph on page 113 shows what new building constructed at Springbrook and still standing today?
11. Social life was racially segregated during much of the company’s early days. On page 33 are pictures of both an all-Black and an all-White baseball team. According to the text on page 32, what was the score of the all-Black team’s first game against Maryville College?
Your Turn:
Find a photograph that you think is meaningful and represents the history and story of Alcoa to you. Make a copy of the photo with your phone and upload it here. Comment in 2-3 sentences why you find this photo interesting and how it describes the concept of the 3 Questions Every Society Has to Answer.
