Alcoa, Tennessee - Alcoa High School proudly announces a leadership transition within its wrestling program, as longtime head coach Brian Gossett steps down and Sammy Evans is named the new head wrestling coach.
Coach Gossett concludes a distinguished career spanning more than 25 years in education, including 23 years as a head wrestling coach and 18 seasons leading the program at Alcoa. He leaves behind one of the most successful wrestling programs in East Tennessee. Over his career, Gossett amassed more than 500 dual meet victories, including over 400 at Alcoa.
During his tenure, the program produced 14 individual state champions, 38 state medalists, and seven appearances in the dual meet state tournament. Alcoa also earned traditional state runner-up finishes in 2014 and 2016. Beyond competitive success, Gossett established a culture rooted in discipline, accountability, and family-impacting generations of student-athletes.
"Coach Gossett's influence reaches far beyond the mat," said Athletic Director Josh Stephens. "He has set a standard of excellence that will continue to define Alcoa wrestling."
Stepping into the role is one of the program's most accomplished alumni, Sammy Evans, a 2017 graduate of Alcoa High School and one of the most decorated wrestlers in school history. Evans was a four-time TSAA individual state champion and compiled an exceptional 173-5 career record, including 147 wins by pin. Competing in the heavyweight divisions (220 and 285 pounds), he earned four NHSCA All-American honors and became the first wrestler in school history to sign an NCAA Division I scholarship.
Evans has spent the past four years as an assistant coach under Gossett, where he played a key role in developing state medalists and sustaining the program's success. During that time, the team captured two regional traditional championships and one regional dual championship.
"Sammy represents the very best of Alcoa wrestling-both as a competitor and as a coach," Stephens said. "He understands the tradition, the expectations, and the commitment it takes to succeed here."
Gossett expressed strong confidence in his successor. "It's not every day that you find someone who loves the sport, the school, and the program like Sammy," he said. "He is a transformative coach who understands that positive relationships lead to outstanding results. I'm excited to see him take the program to new heights."
Evans expressed gratitude for the opportunity and for Gossett's mentorship. "I'm incredibly thankful for Coach Gossett and everything he has done for this program and for me personally," Evans said. "It's an honor to lead this team and continue building on the foundation he created."
Alcoa High School looks forward to the next chapter of its wrestling tradition under Evans leadership while celebrating the lasting legacy of Coach Gossett.
